Teradici PCoIP Hardware Accelerator PCIe card is compatible with rack servers supporting the following slots:

  • PCIe x8 gen 1.1 electrical slot which, which can accommodate half height, half -length card.
  • PCIe x4 gen 2.0 slot (electrical) which can accommodate half height, half-length card (also known as low profile)

PCoIP Hardware Accelerator (APEX 2800 LP) is only sold as a PCIe Low Profile card, and as such, is only compatible with rack servers.

Hardware Accelerator is the perfect complement for the high visual content acceleration generated by the power of GPUs. Paired with any discrete GPU, Hardware Accelerator efficiently encodes the pixels generated by the GPU to deliver higher frames per second to the end point. Hardware Accelerator is the only solution available in the market which ensures those pixels are not lost to the end point, because of vCPU limitations, which would reduce the actual benefits of the GPU. The card exploits the full benefits of all GPU deployment scenarios including shared GPU (vSGA), shared virtual (vGPU) and GPU Pass-Through (vDGA).

VMware also enables third parties to offer GPU Pass-Through (vDGA), one GPU dedicated to a single VM, and virtual shared – either vSGA or vGPU (with NVIDIA).

  • ·vGPU: Currently only NVIDIA offers such solution on VMware Horizon View, Supports latest OpenGL and DirectX
  • vSGA: Offers limited OpenGL or DirectX support

This depends on the frame rate of the applications you are using. If all the users are keeping a 1080p screen busy all the time, then you would probably want one Hardware Accelerator per every 8 to 10 users. As always, you should test this out with the actual applications your end user requires.

Our Admin Guide, available on techsupport.teradici.com, details the command line to set up the display resolutions that best fits your environment.  Once complete, the card automatically calculates the maximum number of displays that it can offload – no other intervention required.

The two main reasons for not having the card enumerating are:

  • The card is plugged into a PCIe slot that is not x4 electrical (if using Hardware Accelerator)
  • The drivers installed don’t correspond to the ESXi version used. It is important you use the right ESXi driver version.

The PCoIP protocol is based on UDP, but we recommend <150ms of latency to maintain the interactivity of the applications.

The PCoIP protocol consumes anywhere from 200kbps to a few Mbps depend on the activity on the screen (as in pixels changing on the screen)

The bandwidth required for constantly changing 30fps HD content varies based on what level of quality is desired. A native resolution 720p video is typically perceptually lossless at ~20Mbps, but very viewable at much lower bandwidths. Also, for constrained networks, the visual experience is usually better if the frame rate is decreased into the 10 to 15 fps range which can support less than 5Mbps of viewing. The protocol automatically makes these adjustments.

It also provides an easy way to enable or disable offloads on a specific VM to experience the benefits of Hardware Accelerator, particularly with the smoothing out of CPU.
